I just got back home from the long weekend over my girlfriend's house, so I felt I should tell you when to expect real updates.
The monthly top 25 will be a few more days. I was really expecting to come home and be able to post it, but it seems there's a couple slackers not doing their part at the moment, so hopefully it will be up by the 6th.

I am going to spare you any background, because I would be repeating things I read in that interview, so you can go read it for yourself.

I feel like it's that time of the month where I appease all the leeches by posting up a bunch of music to download. This time around, I felt like sharing some of my DJ Shadow shit with the faceless internet. I'm not in the business of posting "official" easy to find releases, so here's a bunch of his secondary stuff.
In case you're somehow not familiar with DJ Shadow, he's this guy who came out with a record in 1996 solely comprised of samples, and it's one of the greatest records in the history of music. His last official record was "The Outsider", which despite having one of the best songs of all last year on it (David Banner's "Seein' Thangs"), it still kind of sucked. I don't really hold it against him, since he's provided me with enough stellar music that it can be easily overlooked. Enough of this. Here's the music.
Radio One Essential Mix 3/30/03
Taken from the UK's Radio One Essential Mix show with that famous British guy. Though this was never an official release, it's pretty common amongst DJ Shadow fans, so chances are you have this already. If you don't, you should definitely grab it if you're a fan of obscure 80's hip hop. This is hands down the best single mix of music I've ever heard in my life.
There was never a complete tracklist for this mix released, and back in '03 most people were clueless as to what the songs were, but since the rise of the Free Music blog, I'm sure there's a 15 year old in Norway who can tell you what half of this shit is. The mix clocks in at just around two hours and it's dope the whole way through.
Funky Skunk Mix
This mix came out a little before The Outsider was released. It was originally a bonus CD if you bought some limited edition Shepard Fairy OBEY T-Shirt, but it may have gotten a wider release since then. It's around an hour long and the first section proves that Shadow should have went with Southern Rap instead of Hyphy when it came to making his "artist departure" record. Outside of the Essential Mix, this is my favorite mix of his.
Endtroducing Sample Sources
I found this on Soulseek a while ago, but a quick Google search tells me this has also been on Torrent sites. It's a 36 track homemade compilation of some of the sample sources that went into making the classic "Endtroducing" record. The folder is broken down by songs so you can look like a scholar to your friends when you know exactly what track Shadow used that Meredith Monk song in. I am not providing you with a tracklist. You either want this or you don't. Don't be a pussy.
Brainfreeze Breaks
These are a good chunk of the tracks used to make the Brainfreeze project with Cut Chemist. The release info on this one is questionable. As you can find it on a lot of UK sites including Amazon, but I still think it's some kind of bootleg. There is supposed to be 26 tracks on here, but for some reason I only have 23. I checked and the last 3 on the "official" release are cut off. If you would like a tracklist, search "brainfreeze breaks" on Google. Your fingers aren't broken, asshole.
Miami Bass Mix 9/9/98
This was taken from another UK Radio show because the UK seemed to be on the up and up with DJ Shadow well before us dumb Americans. I got this from the old Cocaine Blunts message board, I think. It's good if you like Miami Bass or if you're throwing a party and you hope to seem some girls shake their asses hypnotically.
Megatroid Mix (Diplo vs. DJ Shadow)
This is a bunch of Diplo and DJ Shadow stuff mixed together. I would have assumed this is a bootleg, since given the talent and musical output involved, it kind of sucks, but I've seen it on a couple mail order sites. I don't know the person who made this mix, but they could have done better.
One Night in Bangkok
I neglect this mix the most. According to Wikipedia, the breathing enclyclopedia, only a portion of this is actually DJ Shadow. I knew this was a bootleg, but I never knew that part. Anyway, it's a live mix, and no one knows where it's from. The rumor is Thailand, but probably not. I'd say grab it if you're a completist, but if you're a completist, that would mean you would already have this.
Zimbabwe Legit - Shadow's Legitimate Mix
Back in the early 90's, there was some group named Zimbabwe Legit, and Shadow did this track on their record. This was a few years before Shadow was known (except I'm sure UK people knew who he was). Shadow's site says this record was re-released in 2005, but it's not like any of you are going to rush out to buy it, so here's the one track you would need off of it.

This is so new! Here's Shadow's set from this year's Bonnaroo Corporate Hippie Festival. I don't understand that Bonnaroo shit man. It seems to be a lot of music hippies are into, but I've heard a lot of hippies aren't into Bonnaroo anymore because they are sellouts or something, but I mean, they're hippies in the 21st Century. It's not like they can take a time machine back to the 60's when the shit was poppin'.
Anyway, Shadow mixes all of his own stuff during this set. It's pretty cool. There's also a section with Lateef The Truth Speaker that I could have done without.
I was also going to post the Influx EP, but you can find that on Pre-Emptive Strike, and then I was going to post the Keane remix he did, but I didn't feel like ripping the vinyl, since I don't keep my stuff in order and have no real idea where it is. Enjoy bloodsuckers.
I don't know if you noticed, but it's fucking hot outside. Of course, if you're not in New York, maybe it's not hot. Either way, my computer isn't in the same room as the air conditioner, so it's a real pisser. When I first got my iPod Video, someone told me about a program called Handbrake, which at the time, was Mac only. Now it seems to be for all OS's and it's super easy to use to convert DVD to iPod video, along with a bunch of other formats. You can even encode separate chapters, so now more jumping through all kinds of hoops to separately convert single episodes from TV DVDs.

I started fucking with it tonight, and encoded a trailer from the DVD 42nd Street Forever. If you have Netflix, I HIGHLY recommend renting this, along with the second volume. (There's an XXX one too, but that's not on Netflix). Especially if you're into exploitation/"grindhouse" type flicks. It's DVD comprised of old movie trailers they'd show in the grindhouses back in the day. If you saw the movie Grindhouse and like a lot of people, thought the fake trailers were the best part, you need to see this DVD, as the actual trailers they would make back then were way crazier.

I was on Smoking Section earlier today, which is a site I don't visit as much as I used to because I've since found a ton of other easier to navigate hip hop blogsites, but every once in a while they'll have a few things that no other blog really catches on to. Today they had a record by Nabo Rawk called "Mount Olympus Steeze" available for "sampling". That got me pretty pumped because I was a big fan of the 12" above and the "Sloppy Seconds" LP that followed by a group called Porn Theatre Ushers, which Nabo is/was a part of.
Hailing from Boston, PTU was yet another group I found out about through the old Underground Hip Hop website and I just happened to stumble across the 12" in a random record store in, I believe, Northampton, MA. This is still one of my favorite 12"s I own. PTU consists of rapper Nabo Rawk and Producer Mr. Jason. Nabo's flow is pretty straightforward, but the dude's got jokes. He's a punchline rapper with a never ending supply of crazy similes, metaphors and obscure wrestling references ("I'm stompin' out big cats like Ernie Ladd"). He also has a thick Boston accent which I would normally find repulsive but it works well for him and all the goofy shit he says.
Mr. Jason's production is also pretty fucking wonderful. It's very sample happy and a bit lighthearted and goofy not unlike Prince Paul's early work. Honestly, If you're not a fan of Nabo's rapping, you should still grab this for the instrumentals.
Like I said earlier, PTU went on to release the LP "Sloppy Seconds", which I enjoyed a lot, but I've unfortunately lost it and have yet to replace it. After seeing Nabo's new album on Smoking Section, I checked his Myspace and found out PTU released another LP in 2004 called "Taxachusetts" . I have never heard this and probably need to track it down. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. The Myspace bio also says the PTU has since disbanded but may get back together and release another album under a different name.
Check out the 12". You won't be dissapointed, and if you are, you're a dick.

1. Blogsite, Music N Media has posted up a new DJ Kool Kid/Three 6 Mafia mixtape. I normally don't advocate downloading such things, not because they're possibly illegal, but more because they are usually horrible, and honestly, this "mixtape" sounds like it was made with Audacity, and I guess I could have done it myself and saved time not listening to all the DJ overdubs and promo crap, but in case you haven't heard, Three 6's next record got pushed back to July 3rd, and this weekend is like the beginning of Summer and you can't have summer without Three 6 Mafia. This mixtape is 95% old shit (There's a beat jack of "hustlin" i've never heard before and another track that sounds like it was recorded straight off XXL's streaming audio section), so it should catch you up with Three 6 in case you've been slacking. Go get that.
2. Stones Throw threw up a new podcast which is all Madlib remixes he's done over the past 10 years, all mixed together by J Rocc. Some of them are official remixes, and some are bootleg ones he did for fun. This includes that dope bootleg Nas remix of a song I don't know the name of that sounds like it could have been in the Logan's Run movie. It was also on the last Mind Fusion CD. Either go to the Stones Throw site, or subscribe to the podcast through Itunes if you want it. It's all free and LEGAL.
3. Speaking of i-things. Does anyone out there in cyberspace fuck with video i-pods? I have one, and I'm normally too lazy to rip DVD's into mp4 format, and I'm not about to pay for that shit on itunes, so I was wondering if anyone out there had cool shit in mp4 format or knows of a place where I can get cool shit in mp4 format. Not torrent sites though. Those things piss me off. If you are too shady to share your vast mp4 info with the entire world, feel free to e-mail me or hit me up on AIM: Mikedikkwst. I was originally going to post this when El-P's "I'll Sleep When You're Dead" CD came out as part of a Post-Apocalyptic hip hop package, but I never got around to it because it was one of those ideas that I think about doing while I'm at work during the day and then I get home and don't feel like doing anything that resembles a good deed to the general public.
Then while I was uploading it, I noticed it wasn't actually out of print, which I was kind of amazed by. I still think it's pretty hard to come by if you're searching in normal stores, but you can still mail order it from a number of places, like Amazon, so if you enjoy it, support the scene or something and buy it for $4.
Annnnyway, Ice was a group featuring Justin Broderick, who is most known for being in Godflesh, but the younger folks and hipsters would also recognize him from his current group, Jesu. Kevin Martin was also in Ice, and he's known for a number of weirdo projects, but also went on to form Techno Animal with Justin Broderick, which is like a more refined version of Ice.
This was Ice's second CD. The first was a lot more industrial, but "Bad Blood" was heavily influenced by hip hop. Of course, Broaderick and Martin filtered that hip hop influence through their respective heavy-as-balls and all over the place weirdo musical backgrounds, and while this isn't something that 90% of the average hip hop fanbase would enjoy, as far as making something that sounds like actual hip hop if that Mad Max shit actually went down, they were spot on.
The songs are very long and most don't have actual rap song structures. I guess if you were a prick, you could call them "soundscapes". The reason I like the CD is because the drums are devestatingly heavy. If they ever took drums like this, and placed them under a more formal hip hop sound, it could have been brutal. Of course, this is kind of what they ended up doing with Techno Animal, but that's even too out there for most people.
I'd reccomend this for fans of Dalek, Techno Animal (both groups worked together on a 12" I'll probably post up one day once I dig it out), EL-P and anything in between. El-P even pops up on this, but he had a knack for finding weird shit to pop up on back then.
If you're open minded, you might want to give this a try, but you also might want to smoke a ton of weed or PCP before taking a listen.

My Mix for May (alliteration) is a Disco mix, which I know is kind of suspect. A friend of mine wanted a disco mix CD, and I have plenty of disco records laying around, so I told her I'd make it for her. It's not AS lame as a mix full of Disco music could be, but I'm not going to pretend like everyone will love this. I'm just throwing this up here in case anyone plans on doing a ton of coke and dancing the night away anytime soon. Or perhaps you have a younger mom like me, and she was into disco, and you can pass this off as your own doing and give it to her for Mother's Day.

Sometimes I like to search Youtube for awkward freestyle rap battles, so while you're downloading all this mess, feel free to watch the legendary rap battle between Derrick and Baby Thug #2. I can only assume Baby Thug #2 is part of a tag team named the Baby Thugs. This is mostly awkward because it's in a school locker room.
I wanted to throw this up before I went to bed. I'll be back to updating regularly tomorrow, and I'll even go back and put a tracklist and other shit in this post for those of you who don't know how to use www.allmusic.com and can't figure out the tracklist for yourself.
